In 1985 Janek died, and Marysia was devastated. She continued to cherish his memory throughout her life. A short time later, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and had a lumpectomy to remove it. Far from breaking her spirit, she recovered from her husband’s death and from her cancer to lead a very full and active life.

By 1990 she was in a relationship with ‘Rupert’ whom she referred to as ‘her gentleman friend’. She was playing Bridge regularly, studying at the University of the Third Age, and expanding her circles of friends.
